How to draw a floor plan to scale

Turn four wall measurements into a closed outline. Work through an 8 × 6 m example, then check the finished room against its 48 m² floor area.

Measure from corner to corner

Sketch the room from above and mark one starting corner. Measure along each interior wall face in the same order. Write door widths and their distances from the nearest corner separately so you can place them later.

Studio uses metres. Enter 3.45 for a wall measuring 345 cm. Zoom changes how large the drawing looks on screen; the wall lengths and the scale bar tell you its real size.

02

Enter three wall lengths and directions

Open the exercise at its first corner. In Draw walls, enter a Wall length (m) and Direction (°), then choose Add wall for each row. Directions are measured from screen-right.

Close the outline and check the area

After the three entries, the left side is open and there is no room area yet. Choose Close room to connect the last corner to the first. The final wall measures 6 m. The room should now read 48 m², the product of 8 m and 6 m.

Verify the drawing before furnishing

Select the room in 2D and compare each dimension with your notes. For an independent check, use the Measure tool between opposite corners. In this rectangle the diagonal is 10 m. Switch to 3D to inspect the enclosed space.

Measured drawing FAQ

What if I measured a wall in centimetres?

Studio takes lengths in metres. Divide centimetres by 100, so a 345 cm wall is entered as 3.45 m. Use the same unit for the next wall.

Why is there no room area after the third wall?

The perimeter is still open. Choose Close room to draw the last wall back to the first corner. The guide’s 8 × 6 m rectangle then encloses 48 m².

How can I check that the example is square at the corners?

Measure between opposite corners in the finished exercise. Each diagonal of the 8 × 6 m rectangle should measure 10 m. Zoom changes the drawing’s screen size, not the measured lengths.

Check the finished outline

Inspect the four walls of the 8 × 6 m exercise in Studio. Add a door or a partition once the dimensions match.
