Hands-on guide · Shared walls

Split and merge rooms

Draw the outside once. Add a partition, move it to rebalance the rooms, then remove it to open the space again. Explore each step on the same 8 × 6 m plan.

Start with one enclosed space

An 8 × 6 m outer boundary forms one 48 m² room. In Studio, Partition wall is ready: drag from the top wall to the bottom wall, 4 m from the left edge.

01

Connect one boundary to another

Choose Partition wall under Structure. Drag through the interior of a closed room, starting on one wall and ending on another. Both ends must attach to the same room’s boundary for it to split. A line that stops inside the room remains an independent wall and does not create a second area.

02

Select the shared wall to resize both rooms

Switch to Select / move and click the partition itself. Drag its middle sideways; the adjacent room outlines follow while the exterior remains fixed. In this example, moving the partition to 5 m from the left wall gives 30 m² and 18 m². You only draw the shared wall once.

Wall selection differs from selecting a room or dragging a selection box around the whole plan. Check that the properties panel says Shared wall before moving it.

03

Delete the partition to merge the rooms

With the shared wall selected, press Delete or use Remove wall and merge rooms in its properties. The rooms become one closed space. Furniture and openings on the remaining exterior stay in place; openings belonging to the removed partition go with the wall. Undo restores your last edit.

04

Check why a split or move was refused

A partition cannot cut through furniture or end in a door or window opening. Move the obstruction first, or attach the wall somewhere clear. Keep a valid enclosed area on each side. This empty exercise lets you learn the wall interaction before trying a furnished template.

Removing an outer wall is different: it opens the perimeter, so that space has no room area until you close it again. Removing an interior shared wall keeps the outer boundary closed and combines the areas.

Partition guide FAQ

Why is my partition still a separate wall?

Start and finish on the boundary of the same enclosed room. If one end stops inside the room, the line remains a standalone wall. Keep the path clear of furniture and place the endpoints away from openings.

Does moving the shared wall change the total floor area?

In this exercise the outside stays 8 × 6 m. Moving the partition to 5 m from the left creates 30 m² on one side and 18 m² on the other. The two rooms still total 48 m².

What happens to a door when I delete its wall?

Removing a shared wall merges the rooms and removes openings attached to that wall. Doors and windows on the remaining exterior stay in place. Undo in Studio restores your last edit.
